Says Reasonable Negotiations Can Help Prevent Layoffs and Tax Increases

Senator Joe Kyrillos (R-13) urged unions representing public employees, including teachers, firefighters and police, to help support local efforts in the communities they serve to address budget deficits.  Kyrillos noted that efforts in several communities have proven that doomsday predictions of massive layoffs and tax increases can be averted through a civil process of financial analysis and negotiation.

“We have already seen several instances of public employees unions working closely with the communities they serve to enact reasonable contractual changes that reflect the dire budgetary realities of today,” said Kyrillos.  “We have seen several encouraging instances of teachers and policemen working with their communities to prevent layoffs that would hurt their colleagues and tax increases that would hurt homeowners.”

Study Says Residents of NY and NJ to Pay 25% of New ObamaCare Tax

Concerned that New Jersey residents already receive the lowest rate of return of any state on tax dollars sent to Washington, Senators Tom Kean (R-21), Steven Oroho (R-24) and Joe Kyrillos (R-13) questioned the equity of a new plan by President Obama to levy a new tax on investment income that would be borne disproportionately by New Jersey residents.

To help fund his multi-trillion dollar healthcare proposal, the President’s new plan, released on February 22, calls for the addition of a 2.9% Medicare tax on certain income, including that derived from interest, dividends, annuities, royalties and rent. This new tax would apply to individuals earning more than $200,000 and $250,000 for married couples filing jointly.

Senator Joe Kyrillos, a senior Republican senator on the Judiciary Committee, said he hopes that there are no further delays of hearings and votes on the governor’s nominees. The Senate Judiciary Committee adjourned today before a vote on the education commissioner’s nomination or selection of a date when the hearing will be resumed.

“The governor needs to have his team in place if government is to function smoothly,” Kyrillos said. “Delays make it more difficult for nominees to assemble their own teams and begin working on behalf of taxpayers.

Senator Joseph Kyrillos made the following comments following the unanimous approval of acting Attorney General Paula Dow by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“It is clear that acting Attorney General Dow is more than qualified to lead, manage and advance the priorities of the Christie Administration at the Department of Law and Public Safety. Attorney General Dow’s appointment also illustrates that Governor Christie intends to appoint the most qualified individual regardless of party affiliation.

Senator Joe Kyrillos (R-13) issued the following statement in response to the release of the Boston College Migration of Wealth Study which shows that New Jersey’s high-tax policies have resulted in a population flight of entrepreneurs and job creators to lower-tax states:

“This discussion is about one thing and one thing only – the critical need to create permanent, quality jobs for the middle class of New Jersey. It’s the entrepreneurs and small businesses owners that generate the stable, high-paying jobs we need to recruit and retain in New Jersey to build a new foundation for a strong economic recovery.

Father Waged 5-Year Custody Battle

Senator Joseph Kyrillos (R-Monmouth) issued the following statement today after a Brazilian court ruled that David Goldman’s son be returned to him after a 5-year custody battle. Goldman has been seeking custody of his son, Sean, who was taken to Brazil in 2004 by his now deceased mother and never returned. Lawyers on both sides agreed there is still a chance for the Brazilian family to appeal, though the chances of success are slight.

“I am pleased, that after 5 years, Brazil’s Chief Justice has decided to do what is morally and legally right, based on the tenets of the Hague convention. Now Sean Goldman is one step closer to being returned to the loving arms of his Dad, his only living parent. This has been a long time coming, and I am overjoyed for David, Sean and the entire Goldman family.

Kyrillos: Trenton Must Listen to Pleas of Discouraged Business Owners

Senator Joe Kyrillos, senior Republican on the Senate Economic Growth Committee, noted the New Jersey Business and Industry Association’s annual survey of current economic conditions shows business owners don’t believe that recovery will come in 2010. More importantly, survey respondents gave “record low marks to New Jersey as a place for expansion of their business facilities.”

“It’s time for Trenton to listen and respond to the pleas of the beleaguered business owners that New Jersey depends on to create jobs and economic growth,” Kyrillos said. “Business owners not only expect no growth in 2010 – business people are saying that New Jersey is a bad place to grow if they could expand.”
