Senator Joseph M. Kyrillos, Jr. began serving New Jersey's 13th Legislative District in 1988 when he was elected to the General Assembly. After spending two terms in the Assembly he was elected to the Senate where he has served since 1992.
Majority Conference Leader and committee chairman when his party served in the majority, Senator Kyrillos currently sits on the Senate Economic Growth, Judiciary, and Legislative Oversight committees. He was the Chairman of the New Jersey Republican State Committee from 2001-2004 and New Jersey Chairman for Mitt Romney's 2008 presidential campaign. In 2009, he served as the Chairman of Governor Chris Christie's successful campaign and was a member of his transition committee serving as the liaison to all transition sub-committees. In 2012, Senator Kyrillos was the Republican nominee for the United States Senate.
Some of Senator Kyrillos' major legislative accomplishments include sponsorship of the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Planning Authority Act and of the Business Employment Incentive Program, the state's centerpiece incentive program intended to stimulate job creation. He worked to establish the New Jersey School Report Card, and is the sponsor of the Environmental Infrastructure Trust, legislation promoting eco-tourism, a stable source of shore protection funding, as well as legislation closing CAFRA loopholes permitting inappropriate coastal development.
Recently, Senator Kyrillos was a prime sponsor of the Economic Opportunity Act of 2013 boosting the state's private-sector economy with thousands of new jobs and expanding the Grow New Jersey and Economic Redevelopment and Growth tax incentive programs He is also a prime sponsor of the two-percent cap on property taxes that is putting the breaks on excessive local spending.
In addition to his official duties, the Senator is employed as Senior Managing Director of Newmark Grubb Knight Frank. He is also a Director of the Newport Capital Group, Red Bank, NJ. His past experiences include Special Assistant to the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, the Vice President's staff for the 1984 Reagan-Bush campaign, Director of Business Standards and Ethics for the Mid-Atlantic Health Group and an associate with the Beneficial Corporation.
Senator Kyrillos serves currently or previously on numerous boards and commissions. They include the American Council of Young Political Leaders, Bayshore Senior Day Center, Count Basie Theatre, Monmouth County Historical Association, New Jersey Historical Society, Prevention First, Rainbow Foundation, the Two River Theatre Company, and the executive committee of the National Conference of State Legislature and its foundation.
He has hosted a statewide cable television program Tour of New Jersey and other media appearances include Cavuto, Varney & Co., CNN Inside Politics, Paula Zahn Now, Hardball, Scarborough Country, Hannity & Colmes, At Large with Geraldo Rivera, Fox & Friends, News Forum with Gabe Pressman and numerous interviews on New York and Philadelphia network affiliate television and radio, and on the New Jersey Network.
Senator Kyrillos, 54, graduated from the Lawrenceville School, Hobart College and holds a Master's degree from the Boston University School of Public Communication. He is married to Susan Doctorian Kyrillos and they live in Middletown with their children Max and Georgia.
